Overview

Layerd is a mobile hair-booking platform for London, launched around one community I understand well — East-Asians who cannot easily find a stylist for their hair type, or explain the cut they want when there is a language in the way.

As founder and art director I set the design direction and led the user experience end to end, working closely with one developer and one designer. We built it with Claude Code and Supabase, so a very small team could ship a real product.

My role
The challenge

Two people have to trust each other before they ever meet — a customer who cannot describe the style in words, and a stylist who does not want a no-show. The product had to solve both sides at once, in four languages, without feeling heavy.

Approach
  1. 01

    Show, don't explain

Before the appointment the customer uploads two sets of photos — their hair now, and the look they want. The stylist checks them before the visit, so the conversation starts from a picture, not a translation.
  2. 02

    Find your language

A stylist directory that can be filtered by language — Korean, Japanese, Chinese — and by Asian-hair specialism, so people find someone who already understands them.
  3. 03

    Fewer no-shows

Deposits, clear confirmation, and an AI risk score work together to protect the stylist's time without punishing honest customers.
  4. 04

    Warm, not clinical

A cream background, editorial serif headings, and Pretendard for clean Korean and English together. Premium, but calm.

The stylist was genuinely attentive and thoughtful throughout — they listened carefully to what I wanted and made sure the whole experience felt comfortable.

Outcome

Layerd went out as a phased soft-launch — waitlist, VIP invite codes, and referral rewards — supported by physical flyers and QR codes in a residential complex. The platform now runs booking, payments through Stripe, stylist payouts, reviews and a loyalty program across English, Korean, Japanese and Chinese.

  • Brand identity and art direction
  • Full booking and photo-brief flow
